Abstract

One of the significant themes tackled by cinematography is that of war. The animators propose a special approach to this topic. Their vision through the prism of the specific language of the animated film, full of symbols and metaphors make these creations unforgettable. In this context, the film Neighbors (1951) by the Canadian director Norman McLaren is of interest, an original anti-war parable, for which he won the Oscar; another film nominated for the same award is The Game (Igra, 1962), made by the most famous representative of the Zagreb School – Dušan Vukotić. The article will highlight animated films that in an allegorical style point to the reasons that lead to crime and war, as well as to its destructive effects. In the same way, a series of films that are based on the concrete wars of the 20th century will be addressed. In the foreground are the atrocities of the Second World War, with an emphasis on the atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese cities - Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the effects of which are shown in the films: Pica Don (1978), Grave of the Fireflies (1988), In this Corner of the World (2016), etc.
